raise awareness of human rights
The Swedish Institute is a public agency that promotes the image of Sweden all around the world. Their mission is to strengthen relationships between countries, promote democratic principles and raise awareness about Sweden abroad. One way that SI operates is through supporting cultural projects by giving grants. “Creative Force” is a grant where two collaborators, one from Sweden and one from one of the chosen countries, engage in a cultural project together.
The nature of Lindy Hop has potential to address right based topics like racism, activism, history of democracy, participation and gender equality. Lindy Hop can be a tool for activism and a local dance studio can create a sphere of personal expression and be a place for public gathering.
Kalabalindy´s way of teaching Lindy hop promotes reconstruction of norms and we want to raise awareness of human rights, while inserting dance history as an expression of culture.
In our project “Dance and Rights” we collaborate with Mesopotamian Jazz Music and Dance Culture Association (MJMDCA) and Zan Foundation in Diyarbakir, Turkey. During 2021 we are hoping to start a new Creative force project in Uganda.
Please contact us if you are interested in learning more or want to know how your local dance society can work with Dance and rights.

Summary of the “Dance and Rights” Diyarbakır 2020
According to data from TUIK (Turkish Statistical Institute) Diyarbakir was the third unhappiest city in 2017 (48.6% of population) and was the first in 2016.
The goal for MJMDCA and Kalabalindy is to create new social-cultural spaces for kids and youth in Diyarbakır. The children will get to express themselves through music and dancing and participate in workshops that focuses on right based topics and culture.
The initial idea was that Kalabalindy would travel to Diyarbakır and do workshops for three main target groups: instructors, volunteers and children. Since But the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have put an official advise against all travels to Diyarbakır, so we had to change our way to reach our goal. The workshops and meetings took place online instead and we choose to only met the adults via Zoom.
Results that the project achieved.
We:
We are very grateful for this opportunity to make the world a slightly better place. Thank you Mesopotamian Jazz Music and Dance Culture Association (MJMDCA) and Zan Foundation in Diyarbakir, Turkey and offcourse SI. @sicreativeforce
